What's the history of the gym (not the home gym. The "hey, I'm going to the gym tonight" gym)?

When did weight lifting become popular in the United States? The 50s? Before?

I imagine that men had gyms in their basements in the early part of the 1900s, and I understand that health and fitness fads have come and gone throughout the centuries...

But, I wonder when it became part of our society to go to the gym to work out.

they had exercise rooms in ancient Egypt too, even before the Greeks. My hunch is that we've had an area dedicated to physical conditioning/combat training ever since we first starting living in permanent settlements.

in the U.S. I don't know about regular gyms but I know Jack Lalanne was opening his own gyms in the 50's around these parts... So they must have been common by then at least for the upper classes.

I think the early 80's is when mainstream American men first starting hitting the weights in large numbers
