Just had a bunch of random questions come up and wanted to see what you guys had to say about it.

    1. How long does it take to get the first stripe on your white belt (haha noob question)

    2. How long have you guys been training.

    3. What was your first competition.

1 - My gym never gave out stripes, just belts

2 - I was training seriously for around a year, off and on since then

3 - Manitoba Open... competed with like a month of training  Good experience though

    1. 3-4 months, but previous grappling experience in a Japanese Ju-Jitsu class.
    2. 1 year of Japanese Ju-Jitsu, year and a half of BJJ, back in Japanese Ju-Jitsu.
    3. Never. Too old to fight with the young guys, no old guys are as small as I am.

started training bjj in 2005, have taken lots of long breaks and but have been regularly on the mat since last july.
got my first and only stripe after one month of training and my new place is nogi, so no stripes, and very rarely do we have belt promotions.
just had my first tourney and didnt go so well, since i got matched up with my kryptonite (wrestler with good takedown defense and top control), he also won the tourney.

    1. Depends. I got nothing for 6 months and they jumped me straight to 3. Then a fourth a month later, blue belt 3 months after that. Blue I was awarded nothing for 10 months and got 4 in one day, then a purple 2 months later. Had purple for 6 months, got one stripe after winning nogi pan ams.

    2. 2 1/2 years. Now a purple belt.

    3. I did a probably 300 person tournament in Dallas, TX after about a month of training. Had three matches. Tapped a 16 year old (it's okay, I was 17) with a forearm choke, then couldn't tap this super weak chick but beat her twice on points. Looked like shiiiiiit but I'm stoked I competed that early.

Don't even have a belt yet...

I hope to try a tourney but no time soon.

werd I go around 11 times a week when Im amped and like 6 or 7 times a week when Im lazy. So Im assuming Im getting better. The majority of those classes are private or semi private because no one else is in the gym.

jesus fuck man.. that's what Penn did.. He would go to class like 3 times per day, 6 days a week and soaked up shit like a sponge. He'd just work one thing all day, every day and the next day work on the next thing..

I have a hard time finding enough time to go 3-4 times per week...

I never got stripes as a white belt. Went straight from white to blue after 2 yrs 9 months of 4x a week training.

new place i train at has stripe system, and i got my second stripe a year and a half ago.

First tournament, was 5 years ago naga beginners division... got tapped with an ankle lock my first match =(

I work nights and 70% of the time Im asleep at work. It also helps that this guy has 3 classes a day. most people there go 3 - 4 times a week.
