It's a HD that uses your RAM as its medium. Useful for any apps that kill your HD in the process - assuming you have enough RAM.

Well first you have to make one... and it will be erased as soon as you shutdown. I don't have AIM, but I can't possibly see how a RAMDISK could be an emergency.

They're fun to use, however the speed advantage doesn't really justify the safety and data retention factor, in my opinion :)

They are good for testing the speed of a medium when you know that a hard drive would be a bottleneck.

They are good for temporary storage when you are using a OS that is on a non writeable medium. (read knoppix live cd and such)

And they are good for booting operating systems when you need drivers to access the medium that holds the operating system. (linux ramdisk for example)

:eek3: I didn't know I could use the word medium so many times in one post.

ok, it was an emergency because i forgot my admin password :o

i was out of the country for a month, came back, and was totally clueless. the ramdisk was supposed to be for a program which would rewrite the password through redoing the hashes in the registry. (?) anyway, it worked, and im back
