I'm getting 2 servers that will be running a DB for some ticketing software, which way would you set up the raid 5?
4 drives with a hot spare or all 5 drives in the array? The drives are all 73gb 15k rpm SAS.

I'm not worried about space, the existing DB files are only about 2gb, so there's not a concern about space.

what is your level of support? do you have any offline spares in stock?

how long does it take to get the spare from the vendor? 2 hours? 4 hours? next day? If you just order a spare online and wait for it to come, I would implement a hot spare.

On a side note, are your dba's okay with running their DB on a raid 5 set?

I don't have any spares in stock. I have the 4 hour response.

Yes, they're ok with raid 5.

    4 + hot spare

    or all 5 in RAID-6

or 4 in RAID-6 + a hot spare... dun dun dun, 3 drive failure before replacing and all's still good (assuming no more than 2 at a time)

but seriously, just do a 4 drive RAID-5 with the hot spare.

if you aren't concerned with space, how about a RAID1+0 with a hot spare? a 3+1 RAID5 will only give you 73Gb more space, but the RAID1+0 should give you better performance.

if RAID1+0 is out of the question, the 3+1 RAID5 with a hot spare is a definite. just make sure you have some sort of alerting ability so you know if a drive spares out. otherwise, you'll eventually be running with no spare and probably won't notice. :)

Raid5 + 1HSP is the way to go.
