So my parents have a PC upstairs in their house, and my dog Pavlov chewed through the cable running up there. 802.11g almost reaches my Macbook Pro up there, but not quite. So I got this antennae. I figure it will boost gain just enough for it to work. If not, I have something to mount on top of my car when I need mobile access while travelling. I'll just get a USB adapter with a reverse SMA connector like the cheap card I just ordered pops. The PCI card may have better reception with its stock antennae and I won't need this thing. But he wants it fast so I played it safe.

    Good buy?

I need to get a PCI Express or USB 802.11b/g card with a Reverse SMA antennae hookup. Anyone?

This isn't strictly relevant, but it's bugging the hell out of me...

"Antennae" is plural. You mean you "got an antenna".

dunno Probably can get it working with the right drivers.

Does OSX support ndiswrapper (BSD/Linux do, but not sure if the mach-kernel is compatible)

the ethernet bridge is perfect for you, tho... OS independent :) And no need to worry about drivers.

i would recommend the bridge. Easiest, and possibly most reliable solution.

Can't crack WEP that way... I would like this capability for a desperate situation in which I NEED net access real bad.

you probably want a card based off of the Broadcom BCM4311 chipset, but I don't know of any publically, available yet.

Does it have to be PCIe? Do you not have a PCI slot? There are many PCI solutions...

Is ExpressCard the replacement for PCMCIA? I'd heard PCMCIA is being phased out.

Next time, point Pavlov in the direction of a power cord. I'm afraid Ethernet doesn't use a high enough voltage to build a conditioned aversion to cable-chewing.

Bad idea. 120V AC would actually cause the jaw muscles to clamp down, which could prevent the dog from getting away from the cord. I'm all for "you had it coming" but not when death is a sincere possibility.

PCMCIA has been phased out for years. I think 1998 or so was the last I saw em. CardBus took over for PCMCIA and is backwards-compatible. After 8 years of service, CardBus is being replaced by ExpressCard.

You misinterpret my intentions. I think that the best way to teach a dog not to do something is to arrange for its replacement, preferably with a cat. But that's just me.

Ah, that's why I never noticed the changeover to CardBus. I love backward-compatibility.

The fucking antennae doesn't fit the fucking card. Grrrr...

    I'm buying this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833109024

and then I'll just patch the wire the dog ate with two sockets at either end and a patch cable. Then I'll put the wireless bridge at the upstairs corner of the house.

Now, can someone recommend me an antennae for the Ethernet Bridge that will help cover the middle of a big fucking house through walls and shit? Directional but with enough to cover the house front and back.

It would be cool if it plugged in or whatever and amplified the signal.
