won't work. By the time the detector goes off, the cop already has your speed registered. You need something that messes with their signal -- and that's not legal.

I have a cheapie radar detector I bought used. It's a few years old and I spent 20 bucks on it. It beeps at every cop sitting in a speed trap before I see him/her. If you speed a lot, get an expensive one. If you speed on a few occasions, get a cheap one.
They're like condoms though, never 100% effective. :)

My V1 always picks up radar way before I see the cop, problem is most all cops use instant on now. I also like knowing when I've been clocked though, (you know how when you pass a cop doing like 10-15 over and you're like damn I wonder if he clocked me). Don't even bother with a cheapo one, and even a top of the line one won't always save you.

It all depends on what you are looking for, and what they use in your city. My town uses all laser, so I would need one that shifts laser, which IS legal.

However, outside the city limits, they use radar, and you can't block that. It's illegal.

The Passport Escort 8500 seems to be the best I have seen, both in reviews, and from feedback from the public.

It's not really legal -- it's just not illegal, yet.

I imagine it soon will become illegal, tho.

I have a passport escort 8500 X50 that i bought at bestbuy for $270. I swear by it, it even worked very well today on my two hour trip. It gave me an advance enough warning for me to slow down from 80mph to 65 and about 2 seconds later i saw a patrol cop hiding in the bushes. The valentine v1 is also a great product, but i wouldn't deal with anything other then these two.

My 8500 x50 already payed for itself multiple times by now, highly reccomend it!

V1 is definitely the way to go. I bought myself a V1 and my wife a Passport a few years back and after a year or so I let her borrow my V1 when her Passport crapped out on her. She wouldn't give the V1 back, so I finally had to order another one. People who've never spent a significant amount of time driving with the use of a V1 will say the arrows are useless, but they really are handy once you train yourself what different combinations of arrows and signal strength increasing or decreasing means.

By the way, I had a two or three year period where I got pulled over five or six times. I haven't been pulled over once since I started using a V1 in 1998. No radar detector is a substitute for watching carefully for speed traps, cars braking for no apparent reason, etc., but it's a good first alert.

v1 has ALOT of false alarms...like its so unpredictable, my bro has one and he thought it wa sjust the shopping mall he was by-but it was really a cop...sucks...also the 4 red dots are rediculously stupid at night...you cant see which band is which.

After driving around a week with mine I learned exactly where every radar was and how many signals and now if I see it picks something up where it doesn't every day or if it picks up an extra one that it may be a cop. It detects radar, not cops. V1 is the only one that makes it easy to tell the difference between a false alarm or a cop.

me passport escort 8500 has saved my ass several times. my gf has the V1 and it seems to work just as well.

you will have to spend $300 to get the 8500 and the v1 goes for $400 (i think)

I have the V1 and it's definitely worth the money. As far as the 4 dots that represent different bands, there's a different tone for the bands if you dont want to look at it all the time. There are a lot of false alarms in the city though but I use it mostly for long trips.

    V1 > *

And radar detectors do work but you have to know what you're doing - they don't make you immune to police or anything.

I had a V1, but opted for the passport 8500 because of best buy eppi. As far as it working, for me driving on the highway it works great, but in the city the cops are using instant on now, which by the time the detector goes off, the cop has clocked you.

V1 has saved me several tickets... however it didn't help my friend when he got nabbed with an instant-on laser. It detected it of course, but it was too late.

Yeah. Detector is just one more tool to use, it doesn't guarantee anything.

A good strategy is to find a good target, bait/encourage him into speeding "with" you, then fall back and use him as a blocker.

When the cop tags him with instant-on, your detector should sense that and give you warning so you're not next.

Instant on is ok as long as there are other cars on the road. When the cop radars another car, your detector should pick it up and give you ample warning. I've had one ticket in the 5 years since I got my first 8500, and that was because I turned the volume down and didn't hear the alarm.

the V1 is rather large! what is one meant to do with the 'concealed display?' the main unit goes in the glove compartment or what?
