I'm having problems with Quicktime refusing to play .avi files. This was never a problem with my white macbook. Then I switched to macbook pro (previous gen) and all I'm getting is "Movie could not be opened. Not a movie file."

Like I said, my now-sold white macbook played anything. Why is this new computer giving me such a headache?

    Any suggestions? :dunno:

    Get VLC. http://www.videolan.org/
Personally, I find it to be the best video player on any OS. Just use VLC to open your video files. Sorry it isn't a direct solution to your problem but VLC > QuickTime.

Do you have Perian installed? Install it and QuickTime should play it. If it still doesn't, VLC should.

Not all .avi files are created equal. Quicktime will shut down or error out if there is the slightest problem with a file.

I've come to the conclusion that you need several video players on whatever OS you're running and if VLC or MPlayer can't play it, the file is fucked somehow.

The really old AVI's made with IV50 codecs, intel video, won't work with anything higher than classic OS 9's codecs. Everything else? VLC VLC VLC.

I just came across an avi file that won't open with Quicktime. Then again, I am running Quicktime X on Snow Leopard. Quicktime X doesn't work with Flip4Mac, so it won't open the file. VLC displays a message to the play the file with WMPlayer.
