It will allow you to install but not register until you purchase the new one. I think there is a 30 day trial period or something like that.

you need to register your XP within 30 days of the install with a legit cd key.

pretty much, so u call MS and tell them u got a virus on your computer and reformatted and it wont let u re-register, they'll give u a new # which could possibly be used on your g/f's computer, 100$ saved

Ok so she has a copy of Windows 2000. I think its pirated tho...Anyway can she UPRADE to Windows XP Home or do I have to buy the full software version. The upgrade says you need 98, 98 SE, or ME.

upgrade should work w/ 2k unless it is some special edition that requires one of the older version, which wouldn't make much sense, but then again it is microsoft

upgrades are really just the full program anyway, just packaged and promoted differently. you can use an upgrade disk to do a full install.

just install with the cd you have. when it asks u to register, try it by online. if not, call them up and tell them you reformatted a comp, and are reinstalling it. and NO YOU DO NOT HAVE THE PROGRAM INSTALLED ON ANY OTHER COMPUTERS :)

I might try it. One more thing, I dont have the actual cd-rom. I created boot disks (was 6 floppies) when I had to reformat mine. Now can I use those same disks. Microsoft.com says you need XP to use them and that you cant upgrade from them, but then again, it is Microsoft.

if you dont have a full version of the XP, then the floppies will do you no good. if you had a computer that didnt boot from cd, then you would use the floppies, at least that's to the best of my knowledge
