A friend of mine has scoliosis and his chiro has told him to not squat due to a flare up he had recently from squatting. He is able to do dumbbell squats because the load isnt overhead or on the bar.

Other than doing as heave dumbbell squats as possible what can he do? He is an athlete and working on putting on mass and needs to work his glutes, quads, hammies and hips and the regular bb squat is one of the best for that. Any suggestions as to what he can do as a substitute to help him. The main goal is to increase strength and size but also his speed that would come from the additional strength.

    Thanks bro's

His doctor has said to try and avoid them. No issue doing deads since its not loading directly on the spine or above his head. He has been doing those but was curious as to what else would help.

Hack squats combined with deads. Plus front squats if possible.

Sorry for the confusion. he has been to both a real dr and a chiro.

He has been doing posterior chain work but was looking for a good combo of stuff to that would "replace" squats.

Thanks for the info so far.

Front squats are somewhat of an issue but not as bad as regular squats for him.

If both doctors said not to do it he's probably going to hurt himself by ignoring them....common sense.

Just about all variants of squats are going to place weight in a way that'll hurt him. If he wants to risk it

That type of stuff will keep the weight off his neck/spine.

i would go see a sports doctor. a regular doc will give you advice but what do they really know about weight lifting.
