I'm hoping to change my state of residence to say... Montana :hsugh:... would I need to have some relatives or anything living there? Or could I just change my state without having an address or anything there?

I heard all you needed to change was intent to live there post-military service. Anyone done something like this before? :x:

officially, you have to have had a residence there, etc, blah blah.

its all an 'integrity issue' FYI, MANY states have no income tax for military, Illinois, PA, others. call your finance people and ask.

Texas does too. While in AD army I changed my residence for college and tax reasons. I just had to supply an address to my S-1 office.

Florida doesn't have any state income tax for anyone, military or not.

Change your state of residence to Florida :x:.

texas, alaska, and florida are some of the best states in which to have residency, and all also happen to have a number of military bases.

no state tax, gun friendly, and in alaska they pay you to own property.

Alaska is actually talking about ending the dividend payments for people who claim residency but do not actually live in the state for at least a certain amount of time per year.

    Thanks for the replies

If I change my state will I need to register and plate a new vehicle there, even if I'm not stationed there?

I've always wondered that... what happens if you're stationed at Camp Pendleton or something for 3 years in California, but your residence is in Florida, do you have to get California plates and everything for your car?

depends on the state, in hawaii you can keep your local state plates but most states require you to have plates for the state your in. Military doesn't care if your plates are in local state or state of residence

You're car does not have to be registered in the state you are a resident.

I have a PA driver licence, NC plates, and I'm stationed in Illinois.

My Florida driver's license has my Mississippi address and my plates are MS.
FOR EXAMPLE!!!!!!!!:::::: If I were to register my car in FL I would pay 7% sales tax on the car plus full price for the tag. The tag alone would cost anywhere from $50 -$200.

Being in MS and therefore an out of state resident, I get an exemption form from my legal office. This allows me to register the car in MS, paying the 5% MS sales tax, and then $25 for the tag. I save in the long run. Tags in MS cost $250-$350 for a newer car. I have included the below equation for your veiwing pleasure.

    FL $25,000 (car) + 7% (tax) = $26,750 + $200 (tag) = $26,950
    MS $25,000 (duh) + 5% (duh) = $26,250 + $25 (duh) = $26,275
    Total savings: $ 675

And the no income tax thing is great! :bigthumb:

the florida car tax only applies if you bought your car new within the last 6 months.

and car license and registration has nothing to do with residency.
