I need a new computer bad, the one i have is 5 years old:mamoru:. It's a piece of junk. anyways, i figured i would just build my next one. i want a case that is small, really small. i like dells slim cases, so something like that or smaller. here are a couple i'm looking at.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811204007
    and
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811108060

my concern with the second one is the power supply. i'm not sure how big of one i will end up needing.

i will mainly use the computer for basic stuff. i don't plan on playing any big games. however, i want to run a dual monitor setup (need the space to look at multiple charts etc.). so any recomendations for a solid video card would be great.

also, should i go on and put 4 gb of ram in? i will probably keep this comp for awhile. anyways, my main concern is finding a case at the moment. so if you know of any good small cases let me know. also, any recomendation as far as to what parts to buy for what i will be using the computer for would be awesome. im sure i will have more questions, so i will just keep it in this thread.

The only problem with the upright slim cases like the first one, is that they require a slot-load dvd burner. I'm not a fan of those things.
Over time, they tend to start putting slight scratches on the discs.

As far as the second one goes, there's a ton of the media center style cases
that have either don't have a psu, or have a better one than that one.

For basic computing, you won't need 4gb with XP or Vista.

thanks, i will look around some more for a case.

also, how good are computer speakers now? i ask because depending on how good speakers are now will help me decide on a sound card.

not really an audiophile. i asked because i like to listen to classical, opera etc. so i'm really want to get some good speakers. i didn't know how computer speakers had advanced. could i hook up a home stereo system to my comp? what kind of soundcard would i need to do that?

just looked at them. they are nice. im looking at a silverstone that is in the same price range. but if im gonna spend that much on a case, i would like to find a way to make it up somewhere else.

so, any basic sound card will work right? so that will save money. whats a good video card for the money that i can run a dual setup on? i figure i could save a little here since i won't be playing any games really.

i was going to get this silverstone case, but then found a review saying that it doesn't have enough ventalation and will overheat. is there anyway to fix that for this case? if not, i want to find something similar. or, i would take a verticle case as long as its slim. i mentioned the dell, its only 3.9 inches wide. know of anything similar?

Unlike the puny little fans that the Silverstone comes with, the Antec comes with two 120mm fans.
Also unlike the Silverstone, the Antec will not overheat.

Never had an issue with the silverstone and heat. But I have had a bunch of shitty antecs.

did you use one of the small cases for an everyday computer setup? the pic i posted was the one i liked the most, but i read a review and said in 10 minutes it got hot and not long after it froze up. said that even with an under clocked processor it was still unstable.

could i possibly sit it on one of those colling pads for a laptop? they aren't loud are they?

I used it for a HTPC, which can get hotter than a typical setup. We have demonstrated many times that I build systems with thought in mind, and use higher quality components. Heat and noise are two issues that I take very seriously.

60mm fans would have to run at speeds approaching a dentist drill to match the cooling capacity of 120mm fans.
