Calibration means that you set your monitor to a set standard that will display your photos just as they would look if printed by a good lab.
Characterizing your camera means that you set it to perform and/or output files the way you want them.
afaik characterising is mapping how the monitor reacts in terms of colour/gain, calibrating is applying a profile to tailor its characteristics.
