I had Lasik eye surgery some years back, and the results have been great. Will this be a barrier to me getting into the Air Force?

doubt it as the AF will give you lasik if you qualify and get on the list.

Oh, ok. Sounds great then. Glad to know, I would hate to be disqualified for something like that. Of course you are saying doubtful, and don't know anyone that has been in that position?

AF has just recently started accepting LASIK, before it was just PRK

Hmmm, wonder what all they would want from me. Proof of the operation? Pre and Post Op condition? I know I don't have any side-effects from it. I got the med info faxed over to me. Ugh this makes me kinda worry.

Plenty of people in my shop has had lasik...either before or after the came into the AF. If you aren't a pilot then I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just disclose the facts and listen to what the MEPS doctors have to say. If they require paperwork just contact your doctor and get it.

I have the paperwork showing I had it done, so I guess it won't really be an issue. At least I hope not.

Ask your doctor to give you a letter with your pre-op evaluation and the post op results. Ask him to specifically include a sentence or two as to whether your eyes are medically/visually fit for military service. Bring that with you to your recruiter and to MEPS. At MEPS, they will probably send you to an off-site specialist for another eye checkup. Bring a copy of your letter/records with you to that checkup.

As long as your doctor and the MEPS specialist agree, you should be okay.

Crap, Lasik was done in 2003, that Doc isn't even at the same hospital. He went and opened his own thing. And I moved 4 hours away LOL! I have the pre-op and post-op evals, both saying things are fine. The recruiter told me just come on in and we will walk thru this.

Ugh, I hate the possibility of complications, rather even more complications.

I hope to god that is true! I am so getting close to that age, 27... I need to get enlisted by November 5th! :noes: This process scares me, delays suck. And I don't want to just take a job to get in, if I have to I will go DEP to get the job I want.

You just have to be in AF BMT before you turn 28. You've got a year left to go I suppose. Can you reach your doctor and have him mail you something official?

What could he mail me? I mean wouldn't he have to examine me first to say anything about my current condition?

If thats the case wouldn't your AF career be worth the 4hr road trip?

He can give the details on the condition of your eyes before the operation and after the operation. He can say whether your eyes were fit for military duty when he finished treating you. And he can give technical details on exactly what he did to correct your eyes and how close the procedure was to fixing what he determined to be your problem.

I see where you went with that. I know I know, my career or a 4 hour road trip. I know which I would undertake. I will see what the recruiter will say about my paperwork I do have. If I have to, of course I will make a run down to Austin to get the stuff checked out.

Ya, and Ranger, I got lucky. One eye has 20/20, the other is 20/15. So operation a success, back in 2003 though LOL
