From what I've been reading it no longer is.. However I mainly tinker with adobe photoshop and am trying to imagine if there would be any delay, besides the start up for loading aprox 8,000 fonts. Currently have Windows 7, 4GB and a Duo-Core, so performance would be strong, but have read mixed thoughts, etc. The quote below explains what someone wrote on the subject and it seems to fit correctly, however anyone have personal expirence?

If you (or any other "designer") needs that many fonts, there's a problem.

I understand the limitations on font usage in matter of design and subjects of itself, however I dislike using a font manager, also do not favor using font's other have already used millions of times for unique artwork and design. Anyways, I need a questions answered not a lecture here, yet thanks for putting in your input of opinion.

I downloaded a huge pack of fonts and it slowed down using the text tool in Photoshop, so I just deleted them.

subtle wannabe brag post. lol jk :mamoru:

But seriously, tens of thousands of fonts just seems silly. Beyond being overwhelmed with choices it seems like you would spend way too much time just trying to browse through that many to find what you need to get a job done. Why not just stick to a few favorite/useful sets and then just search the various font sites for that unique/interesting font you need for a specific project when needed?

Exactly what I do, and what i've always done. Works fine.. and I don't have to scroll through thousands of fonts looking for the commonly used ones.

If you're just using them in Adobe for the most part, you can stick them here so your regular windows font list isn't HUGE

    Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Font

Thanks for the tip, did not know this.
I'm around 18K fonts now, didn't want to install them into Windows quite yet.

Installed about 15,450+ fonts into windows, Adobe Photoshop used to load within 3-5 seconds and would run flawlessly. After the install, Photoshop is running at 55%-65% CPU usage max, with about 180-250K memory usage with nothing opened.. Photoshop wouldn't load right and is freezing/stalling, waited 5 min still stuck on being responsive but loads really bad. Going to stay under 1,000 this time and post back. With that said as well, going to get a font manager.. I have a brand new machine that can handle almost anything thrown at it, but this seems to be overload for Photoshop.. Windows on the other handle has been the same, no lag or anything and has been loading very fast! Unfortantly, going to remove them and use a manager.

Update, windows start up times went from 10-12 seconds to 2-3 min! Do NOT install this many fonts, use a manager instead. Had to do a system restore to remove them, and that was the only option I had to do so.. Deleteing more than 10 fonts in the Font Window will freeze Explorer and task manager can't force it to quit.. Back to finding a font manager, atleast it was worth figuring out for myself and now we all know the answer..
