A&P Question regarding AF and camera bodies...

Discussion in 'Lifestyle' started by coughlin's law, Aug 31, 2009.

  1. If I were to upgrade from my 350D to say a 40 or 50D, has the AF improved to where I could take photos of a very dimly lit to almost not lit subject (in addition to a prime lens?)

I'd have to say "not really". You still need something for the camera to lock focus on. I shoot with a 5D, 5DII and 1Ds mk II with mostly L lenses, and I still have trouble locking focus in dim light without using my strobes focus assist beam.

My 40D had terrible times focusing through the kit 28-135 and the 50mm 1.8 prime.

On the other hand the same body with my 16-35L or my 70-200L can focus in near darkness without an assist beam and it doesn't hunt at all to achieve this.

Just switch to Nikon — they can shoot in a pure darkness with no noise and nail the focal point plus internally make the subject MORE interesting.
