I have a p4 machine that I built myself last October. Its a 3.0HT w/ 1 gig dual channel. The thing usually runs around 39C when idle. I added a 9800pro last night b/c I needed to upgrade the old video card. Now the machine idles 10degrees more Celsius with the addition of the card. You guys think I need a new heatsink and fan? Its the standard intel one that comes with the processor. My only thought is that since the 9800pro requires a power supply connection, it must need a decent amount of power and probably generates more heat. My processor also spikes to 66C when playing games.

Try blowing the dust out of the heatsink on the P4. That can easily make temps increast 5-10°. You could also look at getting one of the Arctic cooling vga silencers. They take up and extra pci slot, but they blow all the hot air out the back of the case, none of it stays inside.
