I can do my first set of 8 pretty easy with very slow reps

Each set after is lower and lower. I see other guys at the gym swinging their bodies for momentum to get more done.

Instead of doing fewer and fewer reps for each set would it be beneficial to swing my body into doing more?

    Do not swing.

If 8 is your max then don't max out on your first set. do 5, 5, max (or more sets of five before you go till failure for your last set... it's up to you and your program).

Also, if you do wide grip pullups you'll work your lats more, so if you want to be able to do a lot of pullups that is the key.

everyone i see is trying to do workouts easier, hence the swinging of the body..

The whole point of working out is to do whats hardest on the body.

I'm fairly light, have a wide back for my weight, and still suck at pullups. :wtc:

I always end up using the assisted pullup thing at the gym to even pump out 4x8s.

i've heard the opposite... how many pull ups total will you have done by the end of your work out?

i like to see how many sets of 8 i can do. by the end of my work out i can be around 50 pull ups.

Who gives a fuck if you swing your body weight. There comes a time when you can't do any more with good form. In this case, bad form isn't going to damage your body like it could with deadlifts or something. Its just going to allow you to do a few more reps with effectively less weight where before you would just stop, thus increasing hypertrophy. If you are at your max with good form and can't do anymore but don't feel worked enough (you should know your body if you've been in the gym for > 6 months), swing your body weight and do a few more reps. Fuck everyone else.

i usually mix it up each week. do 18 or so pull-ups or get a belt with some weight or do lat pull-downs intead for 8 or so reps.

don't swing, when i do full sets my sets usually are something like this: 18 reps, 13 reps, 10 reps, 8 reps. I die pretty fast but that's normal when you go to complete failure.

You'er supposed to treat it like any other muscle building workout like you would with weights :ugh:

Would you max out on your first set of benching?

Uhhh no, you should just do another set, you fucking gimp.

Work variety in...max out sets, one arms, wides, narrows, towel chins, weighted, pyramid sets, plyo chins, finger chins...
Within a month I raised the max number of GOOD form chinups from 8-31. Just challenge yourself every time you step up to the bar. And be proud because most people are too wussy to actually put in the level of work chinups require. Seriosuly, at one gym I used to go to the chin up bar was literally defunct. It was where the rag pile went.

    .....

If you do 5x5 and use the same weight the whole time, chances are you wouldn't be able to do it more than 8 or 9 reps...

but then you're only doing 5 reps per set as opposed to "maxing out cause you can only do 8 reps" :hsugh:

No, he's advising someone to do something with improper form which could lead to them getting hurt or at the very least making an ass of themself.

This helps as well.. I usually do three sets widegrip and two narrow...

Pullups > chinups though. chins really focus on biceps and pull ups will work IMO if you do plenty of pull ups and also have rows in your routine your biceps will be fine without isolation.

If you didn't have the reading comprehension and capacity of a 5 year old I think it would be quite easy to understand.

Say you were on the 5x5 program and your lat pull number was the same as your bodyweight... it's the same exact exercise.... On your first set of 5x5, let's say you should be able to do 8 or 9 reps of that weight... but you don't do it, according to that program, you only do 5 reps for each set, even though you could do more. This allows you to do more sets and by the last couple you'll be struggling...

Conversely, if you max out on your first set, your next set will likely be much weaker and you won't get in as many reps, and by your final set, you will have racked up a much smaller number of reps than you could have, had you not maxed out on your first couple sets.

It can't be made any clearer than that.

and yes, pull ups require proper form just like anything else, I've seen swinging result in lower back injuries as well as make people look like total idiots. Just don't do it.
