I roll with a couple of freinds in the gym for fun after class is over. Theres a cage in the gym and we roll around and practice take downs etc. I can usually find a way to take my other two freinds down but I have this one freind who always gives me problems.

We usually end up against the cage or if I take him down he will be right next to the cage and use the cage to get back up really fast. My problem is I get stuck in the same position with him. His back to the cage and he spreads his legs wide apart and drops his weight. I usually have him pinned with my waiste pushing his waiste into the cage.

Bassically it ends up being a stale mate where I cant figure out how to take him down and he cant get out. I usually try to pull some shit and it fails.

    Any advice

do you over under or double under?

you can bounce him off the cage as you drop and pull his legs out russian double leg style.

cut to a single, ankle pick, use one of your legs to sweep out one of his to finish a double...

if you have over under slightly circle toward your underhook and drop down clasping in the crotch under hook hand palm down, overhand palm up. Your ear will be in his chest. Back will be straight but angles forward knees bent, From here like a squat power up with the legs and thrust the hips forward. Your opponent will come 1-3 inches off the ground. Push with your head, pull with your hands. You'll get a full lateral opponent and then drop him down.

another option is the knee smack. It can be done from the Underhook or the leg.

You again circle toward the under once on his side you lean so your overbook hand can come to knee lvl. Your underhook reaches up and across to full extention, as that peeks your overbook hand is smacking into his knee and you drive forward.

Im actually pretty good with judo throws. I was able to get him with an uchimata once against the cage but once I used it once he figured it out and it doesnt work any more but even the judo throws are hard when he plants his weight because hes using the cage so its hard to break his balance

judo isnt about being strong. Thats the main problem I see when BJJ guys attempt judo they have orange to green belt level judo and never get any where beyound that because they try to power through the technique and that isnt judo thats jiu jitzu. The difference between judo and jujitzu throws is the kuzushi.

break balance, execute foot work, engage throw,

you have trouble taking someone down when he becomes dead weight against the cage.

if you could deadlift twice his body weight, or if you could snatch his body weight, or just clean it, you could own his ass.

    so start lifting

Im going to assume smell my finger is someone who comes to the cage every month when the UFC is on to drop in his 2 cents worth.

Well its good to see you incorporating some judo into your game ripper, that makes me really happy! Kazushi ftw!

Although to throw my judo knowledge into the mix, even though i don't fight in MMA (although i want to get into it within the next year or so) i do this take down quiet a bit, if i get clinched up with my opponent. Just remember you really need to throw your head into their body with this throw to break the balance, but for me its a really hard throw to realise when you have broken their balance, so keep that in mind when you do this throw. judo is my base style I used to compete on and off in college. Im a green belt. Im pretty decent in Gi but I suck at no gi judo because I cant break balance as easily as I can with a gi
