I'm considering Downloading build 5432. And I have a few questions.

Will I be in shit with MS if I use it?
And if so, what can I do about it?

    Thank you for your time.

    Kirby.

All I know is that it's supposedly still quite buggy...

We got a beta at my company from Microsoft. We tried it on a P4 3.0 with 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, and a GeForce 6200 128MB card. It runs like shit. I would not recommend trying it at this point. There is still a ways to go in my opinion.

    Potentially? Yes. Likely? No.

:werd: MS doesn't optimize the code and turn off all the debug/trace stuff until it's ready for the release candidate stage. That's why beta and CTP releases of their OS run like crap and usually require more memory then the final product.

So as an honest opinion, would it be safe for me to install it to "try it out"?

Safe? Yes, as long as you don't have important data, and you don't use your computer for anything important on a regular basis. My honest opinion is that at this point in time, it is a waste of time unless you have a spare computer and lots of free time.

No, but before installing Vista, you will want to format your hard drive (which in turn erases all of your data). Also, with any beta OS, I wouldn't trust it to be stable and yeah, it could very well crash (in a sense). So, yeah... dont have anything important on there. Back up early and often.

I just reformatted and reinstalled XP. Any conflicts with that?

Well, depends on what you mean by conflicts. During the install of Vista, you are going to be asked how to partition and format just as in the installation of XP. So, you will be deleting the partition, and recreating a new one on the same drive (assuming you don't want to mess with a dual-boot, which I would strongly recommend against).

Damn, I was gonna go for a Dual-Boot. I have 250 Gbs so 3 partitions don't bother me. :wiggle:

And btw, sorry if I'm pissing you off, but I tend to ask lots of questions before I install a new OS(took me 2 months of research before I installed linux on my old PC).

I second the not-recommended for dual boot. If you do, definitely stay away from the bitlocker (or whatever it is called) stuff in Vista.

    No problem at all :wiggle:
Safer to ask than to go in blindly.

I would personally wait for one of the Release Candidates... it should be quite a bit better by then.

Any clue when those will be out? I was in microsoft.com and it was said that the public beta should be released by the end of the month. :x:

I've...or should i say...I am trying Vista as we speak. Install wasn't too difficult. I have 2 HDs installed. I created a new partition on the 2nd drive just so i wouldnt touch my main OS and programs, etc.

I think vista is great. Yes, it is buggy, but thats what you expect from a Beta. If you have some spare time and want to take it for a "ride", i def recommend it.

My question is....I currently dual-boot now. I think. What does that mean?

When i boot up,i have the option to either choose Legacy version (WIN XP) or MS Windows(Vista)....If i dont make a choice, by default, it will load vista.
Why are you saying that dual boot is a problem?

It can be a problem under some circumstances. Awhile back, I was doing a dual boot of 2000 and XP, and the 2000 saw the XP part as a whole bunch of errors, and chkdsk nuked it. My 2000 still worked, but XP was gone. I imagine that a XP/Vista dual-boot could lead to the same thing.
