I know that the superdrives can burn data DVD's.
But can it burn Hollywood movies?

I'm thinking that it can't. This would be the only reason I can justify spending the extra $$ getting the superdrive option. Otherwise, combo it is.

I'm not talking about home movies that people make. I'm referring to making duplicate copies of "Troy," "Gladiator," etc. Movies that I already own but want to make backups.

Are you guys sure you can do this straight out of the box? Or do you need somekind of software to add on? I'm just kind of cynical because it would mean that Apple would be supporting piracy.

Pardon my computer illiteracy. I've NEVER owned a computer in my life (and I'm 31 years old!) :eek4: . It's either work's or school's so I didn't have to bother with hardware/software issues. :o :)

No need for that. I was asking a serious question.
I'm very conscious about not spending money that I don't have to. If superdrives can indeed copy hollywood movies, then I can justify the extra $$ to go from ibook to powerbook. I don't need all the other riff-raff powerbook offers. Just the superdrive.

DVD movies are just data formatted in a special way.

There are free software packages on OS X that will allow you to make duplicate copies of commerical DVDs. However, you can only burn DVD-5 disc on your superdrive and many retail DVDs are in the dual layer DVD-9 format. This means that you're going to have to compress the video in order for it to fit on a DVD-5. Again, there are programs out there that will do this for you.

Basically, you need 3 pieces of software.

1.) Software that will break the CSS encryption and extract the contents of the DVD to your hard drive.
2.) Software that will, if neccessary, recompress the video to bring the disc size under 4.7GB.
3.) Software to burn the DVD. I recommend Toast Titanium

as may or may not have been stated clearly in this thread, you need a burner that can write to dual-layer media. To my knowledge the Pioneer DVR drives (aka "superdrives" as apple brands them) are not currently able to do this. Looks like maczter has a link to an OS X supported dual-layer burner though :coold: so check that out

hope that works as a decent cliff's notes :)

Remeber, this is just for Hollywood movies.
If you want to do Bollywood, you'll need a VHS.
