Can a multi-slot riser card be plugged into any PCI (or PCI-Express) slot, or does it have to be a slot specifically designed for that purpose? I'm casually toying with the idea of building a slim case but I want to be able to use full-height cards, which necessitates having a 90-degree riser so the cards can sit sideways.

The risers I've used have one primary PCI slot that plugs into one slot, and then cables connected to another small thing that goes into another PCI slot.... I'll try and find a picture, I know my explanation sucks.
