So right now I live in Arizona, but I am still an Alaskan resident. I've never owned a gun, but I think I should get one soon (within the next 12 months). So if I buy a gun in Alaska and take it with me to Arizona, do I also need to register it in Arizona? I realize gun laws vary but state, but I guess my main concern is that I will be moving soon (not sure to what state) and how that will affect my potential gun ownership. If I buy a gun in Arizona, register it in Arizona, and then move to Oregon, do I just have to register it in Oregon when I move there? Is there anything more to this that I am overlooking? I just want to make sure I have the basics of it before I start looking into anything else

Very few states have any sort of registration of guns, I don't think any that you mentioned do.

Very, very few states require registration. Alaska and AZ you should be fine. You can take your guns where you move :)

Does it generally matter if it's a handgun or a rifle? In my case it would probably be a handgun, but at this point I have no idea

It just always seems like every gun is registered to someone or the serial numbers have been scratched off. Does that just have to do with who it was sold to or is that just complete bullshit?

If the serial numbers are scratched off, that gun wasnt bought legally, you should never run into a gun like that when buying one.

I was referring to tv/movies. It seems like every gun ever found on a tv show is either registered to someone or the serial number has been scratched off. Because of that I assumed all guns had to registered with a state

That actually crossed my mind when I typed that earlier. Ok, so if I go to a gun store tomorrow and buy a gun. Once all the background paperwork stuff is done (I really wanted to use the phrase "When all the smoke clears" there), do I need to own/keep any paperwork for the gun?

Only the bill of sale in case you ever need to prove its your weapon.

During the paperwork phase, the gun is connected to your name via the serial number, however, there is no special registration that needs to be done in most states.

Step 1) Never take TV or movies as a legitimate source of information or authority on ANYTHING unless you're watching an educational program by a respectable educational institute.

Step 2) Stop asking these silly questions :o

Shit. I don't think I have receipts for most of my guns.

Oh well. They were all lost in a tragic boat accident.

I think DC, Chicago, and New York are the only places that require gun registration in the US.
