So I've been wondering: how fast does protein get absorbed and sent to repair muscle, and is it targeted?
More specifically I guess my question is: if I work out let's say chest, and then pound a shake and eat a high protein meal, will my body send the protein to the chest since it was just worked out, or will it go all over the body? So if someone were to take protein after working specific muscle groups would those grow faster than other muscles, or will everything get an even piece of the protein pie?
Hopefully this question is not horribly retarded. :o

different types get absorbed at different rates. whey for example gets digested very quickly which is why its great post workout and breakfast. casein (the other protein in milk) and meat takes longer which are why they are better suited for regular eating and pre-bed meal

I see, and does whey get sent straight to fatigued muscles when you take it post workout?

gets into the blood stream, so it goes everywhere.

somebody smarter than me can tell ya whether the worked muscles will use the majority or not, but I would assume it would

are you only going to take protein shakes after working specific muscle groups or something?

It's evenly dispersed thru the bloodstream, but only those muscles that need repairing will use it.

Again... no sense taking largo amounts of protein (to me, that's 1g/lb lean bodyweight) if you're not working out HARD (ie tearing muscles and rebuilding them).

and agree on the types of protein... I take casein before bed every night, and whey shakes during the day as needed to supplement meals/snacks (or the lack thereof)

Well, I'm taking protein regardless, but I was thinking of taking larger portions on certain days if it would help those muscles recover faster.

Thanks for the info, guys.

Let me ask you a question how much can you lift, and how much do you weigh, chances are not much on both.

You are reading into this way too much!

    Yeah probably. I'm 5'3 135lb 12%bf.
I'm definitely not lifting for competition or sheer mass; I'm lifting for functional strength, health and looks (let's be honest.) Just curious about how much I can mess with myself I guess. :o

I heard that your body can only absorb 30g of protein at a time. Is this a true story cause i dont think that could be right:dunno:
