so my friend recently moved into an apartment with wifi internet. her landlord owns the network and told her one time that he can track internet activity.

like he knew stuff searched on google, time spent on sites, and ip addresses. my friends really paranoid about her privacy and i was wondering if there was anything she could do to prevent this from happening. any way of the landlord not knowing stuff like that?

shes got a macbook pro btw.

get a new landlord, or look for a web proxy that supports encryption.

That's some crazy shit. Definitely sounds like a shady landlord.

or, see if she can get her own DSL or cable. Also, if I'm not mistaken, I'm sure that his monitoring of her network usage is got to be in violation of a Tenant Act or Privacy Act or something. If anyone pulled that shit with me, I'd probably tell him to take his apartment and shove it directly up his ass.

whoever is getting the bill for the service has complete control and can view what sites were visited.

nothing they can do, except to buy their own service plan.

Depends on the state... in Cali if the wireless service is included in part of your rent and therefor you are paying for it you have privacy rights, if it's a freebee then your screwed. Same thing with public hotspots here.

This will make all of your network traffic anonymous:

The OS X version of Tor is called Vidalia.
