Whatever the highest capacity CF card they make will fit. Though it's tempting to buy an 8gb card, it would sure suck to have a card fail with 8gb worth of info on it.

    4-5 1gb cards > 1 8gb card

Don't think there is anything in stone about how long they last. Depends on how you treat them. I still have an old 512 from like 2002 that works great.

The 4 gb is great, but again, that would suck to lose 4gb on the last day of your trip ya know. Of course this is all worst-case-scenario, but it has been known to happen.

If you're taking your camera, you are more than likely taking a camera bag, so you would have somewhere safe to store all your cards. That way if one fails, at least it'll only be a few pictures instead of every single one.

you're definitely better off with multiple smaller cards. Check office max and staples.. they occasionally have smokin deals on CF cards...

I have a 1GB and a 4GB for my XTi. I recently went on my honeymoon, and during the day, we were out and away from the hotel for the whole day. We took probably 500 or more pictures each day. That was about half of a 4GB card.

I'd have to agree that even if you can't get back somewhere to pull the pictures off the card, you probably won't need more than a few 1 or 2GB cards. I'll probably start using the 1GB card more just so that I'm not tempted to leave more info on there than that. If I get lazy and don't clear a 4GB card, I'd be so pissed to lose all that stuff. Even shooting on the highest quality with JPEG + RAW, you probably won't need more than a few smaller cards at a time.

the all your eggs in one basket idea is pretty old and busted. they've said teh same since 512's came out, then 1gb, then 2 . . .

cards don't just fail, usually they go bad from inserting and removing, which would happen MORE if you are using smaller cards.

in 7 years shooting digital and hundreds of thousands of frames, I've lost 6 images, all at once, 7 years ago from my own stupid mistake opening the CF door when it was still writing.

    I have 256's - 8gb.

4gb is a great size because it backs up well to DVD's

Then let's not discuss the thousands of people that bought 4gb cards from costco only to have them fail.

I personally have never had one fail, but it can and does happen. Carrying or switching out extra cards is far less of a pain than possibly losing all of a wedding, or family reunion or honeymoon etc.

Not to mention cards that may have different settings as well.

    Apples and Oranges I guess.

    thousands :mamoru: not quite

not to mention that recovery software available is amazing, take a look at the anartic trip the LL went on, almost everyone had a card or more go bad from the awful weather, and 99%+ were recovered just fine.

the chance a whole card could go bad and not be recovered is pretty damn slim. Personally I see more images "lost" when the user gets confused and formats a card they haven't copied or physically loses the card.

So you'd rather bank on possibly being able to recover lost images than just switch out a card?

Accidentally formatting the wrong card is just plain user error.

    Like I said: apples/oranges

and like I said, the old way of thinking large = bad is no longer true, and really never was true, just a precaution.

I'd personally not want to miss a shot switching cards

    ditto.

I use a 8 gig card, which is overkill but it's still nice if I ever decide to take 750-800 shots.
