    1) Is there a way I can set Mail to start automatically when I turn on my Macbook but run in the background?

    2) Is there a way to put an icon for Mail in my task bar by my clock that notifies me when I get new mail, like Gmail notifier does? I know it notifies me in the dock, but i'd like it better by the clock.

#1 System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items
add mail then click the "hide" box

    #2 I use Mail Appetizer
    for the latest: http://www.bronsonbeta.com/mailappetizer/beta/
    for product description: http://www.bronsonbeta.com/mailappetizer/

basically it pops up a little transparent box with part of your message and all that. the little screen also has controls so you can stright up delete it if you want, mark it as read, or open up mail to read the entire message. super useful
