so, i've been volunteered/nominated to take photos for a dance studio. the job itself doesn't pay anything, but i get to handle selling prints to the parents. i will be doing these over the course of 2 days, one in january, the other in march. the largest group should be 16-17 kids. i planned on picking up a wide roll of white seamless for a background, but its the lighting i'm not sure about. anyone tried lighting groups this big with speedlights in umbrellas? should i look into renting/buying a couple of cheap monolights? are the really cheap ones even worth it? the shitty one i picked up for $25 shipped on ebay is ok for doing small small shit like product photography, but i wouldn't use it for something like this. the date in january is just the competition teams, and the full lineup of classes is in march. i will be using my 30d and 17-40 to actually take the pictures, if that's needed info.

I'd rent or buy some decent monolights. Speedlights take forever to recycle. Been there done that.

3-4 seconds too long for something like this? if you can manage to up your ISO and shoot the flash at 1/2 power your talking a 1.5-2 second recycle time.

i think speedlights should be fine, but you could always borrow/rent some alienbees for the day.

I just did a impromptu 30 person group shot with a speed light w/a 60" umbrella and it worked out ok. I am however running them on DIY battery packs and I get about a 2 sec recycle time at 1/1 :big grin:
