I'm in ROTC and in charge of all the freshmen cadets. I've been doing a good job, but there are 2 cadets that always give me problems. I tell them in advance of something we are doing, remind them again before it and they say they are going and are certain. Well that day comes and they don't show and of course I get in trouble for it (which I understand). Then I can't get in contact with them all day. Don't answer the phone, etc. How do I deal with people like this? I know I will deal with a lot more people like this in the future. They are out of shape and suck at PT and don't take ROTC seriously. Late to MS class, etc.

at my detachment if someone is consistently slacking (being late, saying theyll do something when they dont), they get a LOC...i think thats what its called (letter of council?)...with the cadre/commander. i think after 2 or 3 LOC's, they're removed from the program.

Does ROTC allow you to smoke the fucking shit out of them?

At a minimum they need a LOC every time they pull that shit. Document what they did, what was expected of them, and the consequences they will face if they continue to fuck up. They get a copy, you keep a copy, and your chain of command gets the original.

If/when they do it again, they get another LOC AND they get whatever consequences you told them they would get in their last LOC.

"A good leader can get adequate service from the worst of troops, while a poor leader can demoralize the best of troops."

While I agree with that and whichever dead guy said that the three things needed for motivation are skill, desire, and reward; there are some people that cannot be reached.

You need to figure out what it is that is causing them to do this and then correct that. you can try and correct the behavior all you want but if there are underlying causes the behavior isn't going to end.

Paperwork is nice but it shouldn't be the first tool in your arsenal. It seems like you've exhausted all your resources outside of paperwork so paperwork is probably your next option. there are typically specific formats that you need to use.

    1. Counsel them to the standard.
    2. Reprimand them if they do not meet the standard
    3. Punishment
    4. Ass kicking
    5. Send them to the Air Force

    Discharge those bags.

If they are like that in an ROTC program that shit won't fly in the fleet.

Being Freshmen isn't exactly an excuse. Shit, I'd love to be able to be given a chance at ROTC at a University... If they aren't putting for the effort, why keep them around?

One of the guy's that posted above me had a great idea though with the pairing of your 2 best with your 2 worst. If that doesn't work then I'd go ahead with the LOC's and see what happens.
