i'm a beginner and i have a 98 Katana.... got it with 1432 miles for $4k. Only problem is a slightly bent rightside handlebar... I did not notice when purchasing..... I intend on selling it by May of next year and getting GSXR6/R6

friend of mine bought a 99. He had me ride it before he bought it to make sure it was mechanically sound. I didn't like it at all. Very bulky, turning the bike requires too much work and feels unnatural, and power doesn't impress. No offense Ed....but I wouldn't recommend a Katana as a first bike (or 2nd or 3rd, lol). The older (like 94) Katanas (before they switched to that bulky fairing look) seem more user friendly than the new ones.

GS500E is a great beginners bike, easy to handle, and feels fast to somebody who hasn't been on a sport bike. No fairing means nothing to fix when you drop it. Buy one for cheap, learn how to ride, and trade up for a 600 sport bike a few months later.

    I'd never ride a Katana, I don't like them.
