Just wondering how this works... Does it always require a HDMI-HDMI cable for a HD image to be displayed. So HDMI-DVI cables are just for convenience, and wont actually display a HD image? Just looking to get a new TV and don't really know how it works.

For HD you can use either component video cables, a dvi cable or an hdmi cable. DVI and HDMI offer digital transition between devices unlike component video.

hdmi->dvi cables just offer convenience to those with older tv sets that don't have hdmi but do have dvi. DVI offers video only...hdmi offers video and audio over one cable.

Most new tvs come with atleast 2 components inputs and at least 2 hdmi your set either way.
