I thought about enlisting years ago but have changed my mind but I am still curious. If you require glasses or contacts to see does the army force you to wear glasses or can you wear contacts and have glasses for backup? Might be a stupid question but I was unsure.

Glasses only. Contacts can fuse to your eyeballs in a blast of steam or chemical gases/fumes.

in boot and other low level training you have to wear army issue glasses
once you get to your unit you can wear contacts most days

if you deploy then you are wearing the glasses again...also there are options like PRK surgery

Most people that want to wear contacts do so most of the time. The exceptions being Basic and AIT. You would probably not want to wear them while deployed, due to the large amount of dust and trash smoke in the air.

You will wear glasses in boot and a few months after that, but you get free lasik granted you are over 21.

Another reason I hated Balad. Dude from other thread, take note. Trash smoke. It smells funny.

Just had my PRK done a couple weeks back, pretty cool stuff. Defiately worth the discomfort for a couple of days.

Once your vision has been deemed "stabilized" by the military eyeball doc's you can opt for PRK (recommended) or Lasik. It counts as one of the 3 elective surgeries all military members are allocated. For the USMC, I spent 6 months on a waiting list, got to the top of the list, had to deploy, my slot was put on hold until I get back 9 months later. After i Got back, withing 2 weeks I had my first consultation, 3 months and 3-4 consults later, I got to smell burning eyeball, lol. The first 4-5 days was pretty rough, but my vision is allready 20/15 in both eyes uncorrected, and i still have 2 months of healing to go.
