i'm in the market for a used car and i came across this.

    http://www.dtmpower.net/forum/showthread.php?t=141951

91 318is with 175k miles. now i'm not really familiar with e30s, or bmws in general, and i was wondering how long the motor will last. he wants 4500obo.

ive heard theyll go forever if well taken care of, but i'd like to know what you guys think.

That car looks seriously sweet but I would be scared to buy any car with more than 100k miles no matter what make.

yea the car does look serously sweet.

hard to find decent cars under 100k when your budget is around 4-6k :hsd:

If you're serious about picking this up, I would have a BMW mechanic check it out then also run you through a laundry list of what will most likely go wrong with the car down the road. That way you will have an idea of how much money you will need to spend on repairs over time.

should be fine. id suggest getting the belts replaced and possibly a new head gasket. other than that it should run for awhile longer.

but, if your 4-6K and really want an e30, i would suggest getting one without mods for around the same price. it would have alot less miles on it so it would run much longer. i got a *mint* 87 325e for about 3500, granted if it werent sold to an employee it would have gone for 7K. the paint/interior was brand new looking, and had less than 45K miles on it. just to give you an idea of what to be expecting.

i'd rather have a stock e30 325is. you should be able to get a fairly nice example for less than $6k. plus that way you'll have way more power than the 318 plus the 325is has sport suspension, seats, lsd and some other nice stuff

hell I Picked up my e30 325is for $1200 and it just needed a paint job

that car is really nice, but damn the 318's are dog slow.

YOu could always swap in a S14.

I just watched Ebay everyday and the e30 webboards (although they go for a much prettier penny there)

I was lucky enough to find one about 4 hours away on ebay, emailed the guy a cash offer and he pulled the ad down.

I drive a 318is. definetly slow compared to performance cars of today and even the 325is e30, but I wouldn't call it dog slow. these 318s do have an advantage in weight to most cars, checking in at a mere 2600 pounds-thats nothing. they are tossable and nimble, nicknamed the 'baby m3'. mine is a blast to drive. I'd say give one a test drive before knocking it off your list.

its a 318is, it also has sport suspension and seats. lsd came on some of the 318is. with the 318is you get a little more of an advanced enginer, the m42 is DOHC with a timing chain, m20s of the 325is have timing belts. each are fine just belts have to be changed more often and may be more prone to breaking which results in major expenses in repair. that said, I probably would not spend 4500 on a 318is with that many miles. you'll be able to find one with much less miles for cheaper just without the mods.

Not really in the case of the iS, they make a fair amount of power (around 140hp) and the car is lighter than the 6's.

e30s are really fun cars man. sounds like a lot for an asking price though. i would check other listings. if he's a club driver forget about it cuz its thrashed. REALLY what it comes down to is how the owner drove it and tok care of it. if hes a good owner he will have all the maintenance receipts. curious is right, take it to a bmw specialist if ur absolutely set on it. lots of parts will be on edge when you get it

true.. the 318is also has the sport goodies although i thought the lsd was still optional on the 318is. i think if i found a nice low mileage 318is i'd go for it also. i'm still debating whether to go with an old miata or e30 as a cheap track car for DE's. ultimately, i don't think anything is going to be cheaper to operate than a miata nor would be quite as light as a 1st gen miata, but i've always had a thing for the e30 (especially the e30 m3 but i'm not in the mood to deal with the rebuild costs of the S14 motor)

    no, it is a 318iS.

Big difference between a 318i and an iS
