Does the laptop screeen 'turn off' and only display on the TV, or can you 'split' the screen so half is on the laptop and half on the TV?

You should have a few options.
    Both screens on
    laptop screen off
    external screen off
Usually you just cycle through them with the function key and either F5 or F8.

if you were in 1997, then do as dan513 says. However, in 2008 we use the video card drivers/software to accomplish mirrors/spans.
