How many of you plan on or have joined the military after getting your college degree? Was that your plan from the beginning? how'd it work out for you? And is it a good idea?

RIght now i'm a sophmore in college engineering major and i'm interested in joining the Air FOrce once i graduate.I know you could probably find a better paying job with a bachelors degree but the Air Force has always interested me.

Any comments you give me would be much appreciated :wavey:

If you are just a sophmore why don't you join your universities ROTC program?

They have a NROTC program... as for AFROTC, ever thought about transfering to the University of Florida? I believe it's the closest program to you.

I'm attending Norwich University, one of the Senior Military Colleges in the nation. I didn't plan from high school to go into the service but I figured I'd try out a year here and see how it shook out.

I earned a 3 yr scholarship at the end of my freshmen year and I'm going into the Army for 4 yrs AD and 4 Reserve if everything goes to plan.

If you applied now you might be able to secure a 2.5 yr scholarship which would save you a chunk of change if you plan on joining anyways.

If the Airforce has an OCS program you might look into that, if you don't want to switch schools.

I know a kid who is at Emery Riddell(sp?), I think it was, on Daytona Beach, who's doing the AFROTC program and he likes it.

Good luck, if none of this makes sense it's because I woke up 5 min ago.

Is this a grouping of colleges? Some sort of conference?

The only reason I ask is because you capitalized it.

Texas A&M is older, but Norwich has a better reputation for producing quality officers for the U.S. Military, and has been creditted by many top people as being the "best military academy in the land." - A. M. Gray, Former Commandant, USMC.

    Go Cadets!

Oh yeah, as I was going to say, you can do NROTC and cross transfer after you graduate, can't you?

"Give me an army of West Point graduates, I'll win a battle. Give me a handful of Texas Aggies and I'll win a war!"

    --Gen. George S. Patton, Jr.

"The men of Texas A&M can stand up to any men in the world and compare favorably their education and training for leadership --leadership in the pursuits of peace, and if it comes to war, leadership in battle."

    --Gen. Omar Bradley

FYI, General Gray went to Norwich and therefore is biased. Neither General Patton or General Bradley went to Texas A&M :)

    True.
"Prepared to fulfill the sacred duty of defending their country's honor... they answered the call in 1917 with a patriotism inspired by the achievements of Norwich men in previous wars...another splendid chapter to the history of their Alma Mater" -Gen. John J. Pershing

This one is an old one: "The contribution of the graduates of Norwich to the Yankee division was of the best. Excellent officers, splendid troop leaders; everywhere they went they made their mark." -Maj. Gen. Clarence A. Edwards

Anyway, now that I'm done pulling random quotes... Norwich still remains the only private military college in the nation, all others have some sort of state funding. No thanks! :big grin:

Negative. I'm at Norwich. I'm from Washington state, a long way from true home, but Norwich is my home now. I'm hitting my rack now, and I know I'll be lulled to sleep by the sounds of Alumni's fire alarm.

I'm confused about this quote from Gen. Gray... how exactly is TAMU older? Wasn't Norwich established in 1819? :hsugh:

Mmm... I didn't necessarily mean older. Norwich was established in 1819 by Captain Partridge after he left Westpoint. Norwich, however, wasn't necessarily a military school as much as it is "we produce citizens who can lead whenever we need them" school.. get what I mean? While staying loyal to the idea of "citizens who can lead", it has become more of a military-like school but still puts emphasis on academics first.

I hope that clarifies some things :)

I realize you didn't mean older, I was wondering what he meant since, according to you, he is the one that made the comment :hsugh:
