I think this routine looks pretty good. However, I am hesistant to do deadlifts because I experience back pain while performing them. Can you recommend an ideal exercise to substitute for deadlifts?

    Thanks

I would examine why I feel pain when doing deadlifts then worry about fixing my possible form problems or whatever else was wrong before I started looking for alternatives.

i think chris said it best when he said the routine "wasn't for pussies."

man the fuck up, do light weight and improve your form.

:ugh2: If you're implying that I'm a pussy for not wanting to do deadlifts, you're wrong. In my line of work (EMS) a back injury can be incapacitating. We have to lift fat people up and down on stretchers and backboards day-in, day-out. Hurting my back means I can't do the job. I was merely looking for a substitute that would work out the same muscle groups.

:werd: As you learn and feel more comfortable you'll gain some confidence and won't be worrying about it.

oh & .... how do you lift fat people all day & not experience back pain from that? :squint:

a light DL should be nowhere near painful if done correctly. Lifting a fat person on a stretcher would be just as (if not more) painful that a poorly done DL.

You could do an unmodified Bill Starr Routine and just do power cleans instead. Well technically the High Pulls are for DL, but you get the idea

Fix your form and don't even think about not deadlifting.
