how can you tell the difference between the low and middle range (price wise) lenses? i know the top range has a "L" designation. is there a certain "look" to the lense that easily distinguishes them?

L lenses have a red ring around them. USM lenses have a yellow/gold 'ULTRASONIC' ring around them. The cheapo lenses just say canon with no rings.

No idea on those, haven't heard of them. I was under the impression that USM always had either red or gold rings.

Also, DO (Difrractive Optics - 400mm f/4 DO IS USM, and 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM have a green ring in place of the red ring of ther L-line of lenses.

how is the weight/build quality of the USM lenses? when i had a 35mm slr the lenses were hefty in weight like a nice coffee mug. the lower end kit lens i bought is plasticy, light weight and flimsy...

USM ones are much heavier/better quality than the basic canon lenses. Can't say for DO or L glass, though.

I would say that the USM lenses typically weigh at least as much as a coffee mug, yet light enough to still be portable.

USM is just the focusing mechanism.

What would you classify/call this series of lens (with the gold ring reading "ULTRASONIC"):

    [IMG] 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

    28-105
    28-135 IS
    etc, etc

i know, but if they are going to up the quality of the focusing mechanism i'd like to think they'd up the overall quality of material surrounding the lens. this lens i have (regular ass kit lens) is about as ridged as a fortune cookie
