You can buy a long gun from a state where you are not a resident as long as it is legal in both locations. You cannot buy a pistol from any state other than the state where you are a resident (with a few exceptions).

do you have any proof? I was under the impression that you had to buy a firearm in your state or residence :dunno:

I know here in TN that any legal resident/US citizen can buy a long gun. A buddy of mine bought a 10/22 while he was here since they were like 30 bucks cheaper :dunno:

It varies state to state though.

To buy a handgun you do have to purchase in your state of residence. I don't have any "real" proof aside from the fact that I've seen someone do so first hand and every FFL I've talked to here said that it's ok :o

I was told I couldn't buy a 10/22 in Nevada while I live in California, it must vary from state to state. Or the fuckheads at Walmart don't know what they are talking about. Probably the latter.

Well, I'm an FFL and I've also bought long guns out of state. No real proof though.

It used to be that you could only buy long guns from a neighboring state but that "rule" seems to have been dropped.

I know there's a map with states that allow out of state purchases, I just didn't save it, I think it was from a wal-mart or something. Most stores don't know what they are talking about though so it's not like the law helps much anyway

I have bought a 10/22 in a different state so you can.

Although, the Walmart I got it at had a picture of the different states whose residents could buy long guns there so you may want to check on that.

Maybe the law says ok to buy out of state from an FFL, but not PPT? :dunno:

    I'm honestly curious about this.

the law says you can buy long guns out of state, but not handguns. Any purchases made out of your state of residence HAVE to be through an FFL.

The wal-marts around me have a map of the US color coded, red & green, I think.

If you are a resident of a green state, you can buy in any of the other green states, or something like that...I'll see if I can find the map online.

Any time a gun is purchased over state lines it is supposed to be from an FFL. Purchases between individuals are only legal by residents of the same state.

I've seen that same sign at wal-marts that sell firearms. Seems that only restrictive states have a problem with out-of-state long gun purchases because I only remember the usual suspects of NY, NJ, MA, DC, IL, CA, HI, MI and a few other traditionally blue states being on that graphic in a TX store.

    EDIT:
Seeing the OR version of that sign reminded me that save for CA and possibly, HI, it's batshit-random states that are red on the TX chart.

Think it's CA law of some flavor, or it's not worth the trouble for the store.
