This is a very basic question: Is it possible to buy a domain even though you don't have a web host yet? I've never done this before so I don't know the process. The site isn't ready but I just wanted to reserve the name for when I do put it up. I was thinking godaddy.com for the domain and discountasp.net for the host. Also, how do I hide my personal info when people do a whois search? Thanks for any info or advice you could provide about this.

How much should I expect to pay? I checked register.com and it says $35 per year, is there a reason for that? I've seen others say $6-$9 per year.

I went with namecheap.com as suggested, I like it! It wasn't as hard as I thought. Thank you Browning for the coupon and the suggestions. As well for everyone else who helped. :)

I would recommend buying your domains at namecheap for the control panel, just a personal opinion.

Yes, you can register your domain first. I would look around a little more before going with discountasp.
