The Bourne series is based off a book, so I don't know if it really counts.

The Dark Knight was a good sequel. I think there are still far more bad sequels coming out than good ones.

History shows us that the sequel has been a hit or miss. For any serious film looking to franchise the sequel has been on par with the original, i.e. The Godfather, Rocky, Beverly Hills Cop, Terminator, etc.

I think when a series is planned, the sequels tend to be of better quality because they were designed to be part of the story to begin with.

It is when they make a sequel purely based on the success of the original and done only to capitalize they they tend to be bad. Atleast, that is my opinion on the matter.

I would disagree with the OP partially. I think sequels do tend to be a little better but it totally depends on the franchise & even which sequel.

Matrix sequels? They were no match for the original vison.
    The new Batman movies? Equal.
The Burton Batman movies, declined as they went along.

Spidey 3? Pirates 2 and 3? mummy dragon emporer? Star Wars Clone Wars? Indy 4? Live free or die hard? National Treasure 2?

    ALL ABOARD THE MASSIVE FAILBOAT.

Hellboy II and TDK were money though.

Harold and Kumar 2 was decent.

Yes, Spidey 3 was probably one of the 3 worst movies I saw last year.
