now that the price drop is in effect which cpu should I go for? I can't seem to find any benchmarks to compare to two visually. the charts at tomshardware seem to be messed up atm also, any reccomendations on a aftermarket cpu heatsink/fan? I am not gonna overclock, just want something quiet

You could look at the Q9300. It's in between the 2 for speed, but is based on the 45nm die, not the 65, so it does run cooler, which would give you the opportunity to either overclock it more than the other 2, or keep it at stock speeds and be cooler/quieter. The retail Intel heatsink is good, and pretty damn quiet, so I'd suggest starting with it, and if you feel it's still too loud, move to something that will take a 120mm fan like the thermalright ultra 120 extreme or the zalman 9700.

if purchased through newegg,... the Q6700 comes with a free game, Unreal Tournament.
If you don't pirate or have that game yet,... I guess it will at least compensate for the price diff, along with the extra 260mhz clock speed.

another advantage of the Q6700 is that it is guaranteed G0 stepping. there are still a lot of Q6600 B3s floating around, but stores like clubit.com sells guaranteed G0s.

so you think those differences worth the extra $50?
note that you could also use that savings for the aftermarket cooler, or a better graphics card, etc.

    your call.

for the cooler,... the OEM heatsink should be fine since you won't OC.
if you really want an aftermarket one,... check the Zalman coolers with fan-mate controllers. these can be very quiet at low rpm modes.

If he's got the original retail box, you can look at the product code.

If it's the G0 stepping version, it will have SLACR on the end of the code.

what doc said if w/ a box. code should end 'SLACR'. a B3 ends with 'SL9UM'.

w/o the box, 'SLACR' should also be written in the chip
