I submitted a loan app for my 1st bike and i'm browsing around for gear online now. I already have a helmet from the MSF last fall and i'll probably go try out a bunch of different textile jackets sometime later in the week, but what is the point in boots? Are they just to get better grip on the foot levers?

They protect your feet when you go tumbling down the road.

Workboots are ok, but you'll probably want something a little more sturdy. It'll help keep the road from erasing the foot that's under the bike if you lean it too far

Workboots will do the job, but they aren't made for motorcycling. Motorcycling boots will usually have a tougher area where you'll be using the shifter and are designed with more ankle support and padding. Workboots are better than nothing, but I'd recommend boots made with motorcycling in mind.

I'd look into leather instead of textile, if your worried about heat look for one thats heavily perforated, I know many who have been down in textile myself included and the jackets desingrated.
+1 to what others said about boots.
