    20 yrs. old, Tx, buying handgun?

    Legal to buy a handgun at a GUNSHOW, at the age of 20 in Tx? Just curious, I know I'm not legally allowed to have it concealed, just for recreational use. :bigthumb:

    you have to be 21 to buy a handgun and handgun ammo. it doesn't matter if you buy at a gunshow or from a store.

    While they mentioned that you can't buy a hand gun, it is legal for you to own one. Just get your parents to buy one and give it to you as a gift.

    do NOT have anyone buy one, then sell it to you. this is called a straw purchase, and is highly illegal. if caught, both of you can go to prison under federal charges. the ATF is pretty unhappy when they catch people at this.

    and don't think "oh, they'll never know", think "man, they always know. i'd better not". because you NEVER know what they know, or how they know it. and it's not about the odds, it's about the stakes.

    Why wouldnt the ATF make it legal to buy and then transfer to a person under the age of 21 then?

    What constitutes a straw purchase? Maybe someone parents bough it but then realized, they don't like/need the gun and then sells it to their child.

    that could be construed as a straw purchase if it's SOLD to the child. if it's given, it's not. you still cannot possess it outside of your home in most, if not all, states.

    i believe a straw purchase is technically when someone of age buy it with the INTENT to resell to an underage party, but i'm not sure. it could just be the act of selling. this is why you need to research this in your state's code, in the federal code, and with legal professionals.

    So let me get this straight..

    Even though i'm 20, the only way of acquiring a gun is either by actually purchasing the gun from the person himself or having it be a hand me down? Without having to go through the process.

    I'm kinda wanting to start a gun collection?

    no, that's fine. from now on, just put all ownership/possession/purchase questions in here. also, before asking them, the most common answer is going to be www.packing.org go there first, put forth some effort on your part before you ask everyone else to here. if you can't find your answers there, then come here, and we'll be glad to help.

    If I buy a gun online from a private party out of state; can I have it shipped to my FFL dealer since I'm under 21?

    While you can't be younger then 21 and legally purchase a handgun, I do believe you can have it off your property. I was going through the WA State laws. The law said that if you are between the age of 18 & 21 you could possess a handgun under the following conditions: May want to check up on your own state and see :)

    In attendance at a hunter’s safety course or a firearms safety course;

    Engaging in practice in the use of a firearm or target shooting at an established range authorized by the governing body of the jurisdiction in which such range is located or any other area where the discharge of a firearm is not prohibited;

    Engaging in an organized competition involving the use of a firearm, or participating in or practicing for a performance by an organized group that uses firearms as a part of the performance;

    Hunting or trapping under a valid license;

    Indeed. 18 to buy private (the booths say private sellers, and there arnt usually that many) and 21 to buy from a FFL. Or if your dad is cool with guns, have him get it. My dad bought a pistol, and gave it to me as a "gift" ;)

    it's sort of pointless to buy it if you can't actually possess it without an adult, isn't it?

    It's 18 to possess and 18 to buy (21 from a ffl) CCL is 21
