What are some things that I could do to train to do these? I've always done lat pulldowns and I never feel like my lats did any work. So last week I decided to try to do some pullups instead. There was no way that I could pull myself up so I ended up doing some negatives. Fo the 1st time in a long time it actually felt like my lats got a work out. For my next goal I'd like to be able to do these. Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated :x:

static pulldowns are good - pull the bar down halfway with a good amount of weight, and hold it as long as you can.

Other than that, negatives and weighted negatives are your only real options...

I use assisted pullups now. Back when I was 160 lbs the pullups were much easier than they are now.

I usually try going as heavy as a can on these. I'm having a really tough time going up on weight with the pull downs.

I might give the static pulldowns a try. And I'm definatly keeping the negatives in my routine.

I do have access to a assisted pullup machine but I remember reading something a long time ago about there being better ways for traing pullups.

I used to not be able to do any until i started doing negatives. Just jump up there, do ~5 for a few sets. They suck, but it works.

that should be ok then. Just keep em as heavy as possible without losing form.

I would also give the assisted machine a try. Just keep the assist percentage as low as possible, just enough to get some reps in (say 5 to 10) and keep lowering the percentage regularly as you progress.

I see people doing "pullups" at the gym where they don't fully extend their arms and just kinda flop their body so their chin goes above the bar. Make sure you're using good form!

A negative is only one portion of the movement. In this case, you'd jump up to avoid the actual "pull-up" portion (the most difficult part) and just lower yourself down slowly.

fuck i hate pullups. i can't even do 1 with good form, pretty sure i'd have to get some leg swing in there to knock out a couple

Like the weight I use when doing tricep dips? I think the weight would hit the ground between reps no? Is there a better way?

go all the way down till your lats stretch, pull all the way up till your chest touches the bar, and don't let your body swing at all. I used to be able to do 10+ but now I can only do 5 and it makes my lats hurt way way more :)

For lat development, is it better to do an extreme ROM with less weight or a shorter ROM with more weight and why?

    .

I've started decreasing my weights and upping my reps a bit to keep form. I get a better pump and my tendons, bones and joints all hurt less.

I bet your not doing your lat pulldowns properly if you don't feel them. Don't angle your back forward and pull to your chest, make sure you do a full range of motion and pull straight down.

    Do this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ir36YLbSwI0

Don't rock your body back and forth.

I usually do 2 light sets with really strict from and high reps and then I do 2 heavy sets with somewhat lose form and more weight, less reps. The best of two worlds. Granted, I do strict weighted pullups before as well.
