Despite the fact that I haven't sold my powerbook, I couldn't wait any longer. I went online and used DU's store for a student discount. I got the 15" with 2gb RAM and 100gb 7200rpm HD. Can't wait... especially since I want to be able to run slingmedia on it and they haven't released their mac software yet. Damn... I cannot wait.

No... I've read that there are no benefits to the glossy screen... except lots of glare... which I don't really see as a pro.

I never send in rebates... ever. Free ipod = not free ipod when you forget to send the rebate in. I wish I could remember stuff like that... but I don't.

theres glare sometimes, but i think the glossy screen makes the colors pop, and appear way more rich. thats just my opinion from playing with one for 5 minutes.

I got the glossy screen because I bought mine at the Apple store. I expected glare problems. But with the extreme brightness of the Macbook Pro screen... glare is not a problem in any situation. I was surprised.

I was at a Mac dealer today. I was told that the 15"ers might be quietly upgraded to a dual layer drive and maybe even FW800.

So I'm going to wait a bit longer to get an MBP.. Maybe I'll get the glossy screen too

Good deal, I'm glad to hear that you didn't go with the mirror screen.

Its not a mirror. It does not glare. I'm in the 'sun room' and its no problem. My iBook however? It had the matte screen, and I couldn't use it in this room, even on full brightness. The bright screens don't glare because they're extremely bright.

I don't really understand why people would buy one. There are certainly times when glossy screens will glare, especially in situations with light sources behind the screen. My powerbook G4 has an ambient light sensor, so I never have to worry about glare with my matte screen. I guess everyone has their personal preferances.

They introduced the glossy screen as a "feature" to bait people. It is true that they are a bit brighter and sharper in color, but the main reason that they are being offered is that they are much cheaper to manufacture .

You'd never have to worry about glare on a Macbook/MBP because the screen is about twice as bright as your Powerbook G4. I prefer the gloss to the matte. Either way you prefer, glare just isn't a problem, so it would be great if people who haven't actually used Macbooks in a variety of lighting situations could stop spreading mis-information.
