i have problems doing wide-grip pull-ups as well. closed grip is fine. my lat pulldown is about 160lbs for 8x10 reps and i'm 6'4" 214lbs. i always figured my weight/height impeded me from doing the pullups, although i have had a steady progression

tighten up your whole body and use speed
