all i know is that the Psychiatrist can prescibe medicine and the pscyhologist can't.

I'm wanting to talk about my jealousy in relationship issues.

Do you want to take pills or not?

    That's pretty much the difference.

Jealousy probably has little to do with something that a pill could fix, though, so I'd see a psychologist I suppose.

Are social workers in general actually cheaper than psychologists? I'm kinda curious for myself.

A little, generally the more educated the social worker is, the more money they can charge. Social Workers who are extremely well educated and have their masters, or more can charge upwards of $100 an hour in the U.S. Most charge between 50 to 70$. Psychologists generally charge Between 70-120.

How did you pick him/her? Did you follow the search guidelines that were posted to help you pick?

yes. social workers only have a master's in psychology, but they're just as qualified to counsel you.

I don't think so. I dunno what the Masters in Psychology leads to, but there's a master in Social Work.
Also, Psychologist and Social Workers do not deal with the same mindset at all although they can address the same issues. The psychologist will take care of the inner causes of distress and problems while the social worker will work on their social (external) counterpart.

so i went in today, and i found out what the real meaning of codependent is.. and it's me. and the chick that i'm in love with is BPD...

so yeah.. not really sure how to take all this in for now but it feels like i'm on a good path to figuring it out. on the downside i'm probably going to have to sever ties with this girl until she takes care of herself, and that really hurts.

A BS in Social Work qualifies you to become a social worker. A MS or phd can lead to jobs reaching beyond social work, such as program coordinators, therapists, case officers, student advisors, etc. The Psychology degree offers everything a Social Work degree does, but has a much wider scope of available jobs. Social work graduates can go into specialized therapy, which is similar to a Psychologists psychotherapy.

Alot of the laws have recently changed. In most states a social worker has to have a MS in social work. A person with a BS in psych cannot go get a MS in social work and be a counselor.

Aluyminyum is correct. Social workers are just as qualified to counsel you as a psychologist. They can do behavior therapy, marriage and family counseling, crisis intervention and more. The difference is in their training. If you find a counselor that you feel comfortable with and is helping you, then by all means, stick with them. Finding the right kind of mental health professional isn't always easy.

    Good luck to you :hsd:

yeah, it makes sense why i can't just drop her and get away. my addictive personality has latched onto her per se, its like my drug :(

edit: BPD meaning borderline personality disorder, not bipolar.

BPD is incredibly serious. If I'm not mistaken I mentioned something like this earlier to you. I can't remember since it's been awhile since we talked about that girl.

At any rate, you can't fix, help, or even cope with BPD in most cases. It is one of the hardest cases to treat as a therapist or doctor.

They make progress like President Bush makes sense.

yes, i was mentioning to the dr that everytime she'd get really close to me, she'd blow it up and then blame it on me. every time i built something up, she'd get scared or back away or do something.

there's no real diagnosis on her just yet, but just from everything i told the doc this is the conclusion she came to.
