I am currently considering buying an external hard drive to store media on, and i think i want to dedicate it to the ps3 rather than suffer the quality losses from streaming.

My question is am I able to copy files from my computer to the hard drive via the ps3? In other words, am I going to have to bring the hard drive to the computer every time I want to add something to it? Or can i somehow network the ps3 and pull the files from there...or transfer files from a USB drive to the external via the ps3 (to make it more convenient instead of bringing the external, power cable, etc. to the computer)

Also, has anyone been successful in utilizing wireless N with their ps3?

good question and i don't know the answer. but my question is this since you already use a HDD for media, etc. do i have to throw the videos, etc into a special folder like i have to for certain things for psp (memory stick). and do i have to convert the media files from .avi to whatever for the ps3 to play it? never fucked with an external HDD or the media server shit. :o

i dont actually have the HDD yet :o

But from what I've read the HDD has to be in FAT32 format and you have to have certain folders like Videos Music Pictures or some shit in order for the ps3 to recognize it

When you use PS3 media server you just tell it what folders on your computer to monitor and it plays most common media formats without you having to convert anything.

PS3 Media Server lets you transfer files from your PC to PS3. Maybe you can save them to the external, or transfer them to the PS3, then copy them onto your hard drive.

it gets choppy if you have a wireless connection. I have mine hardwired and this "choppyness" you speak of is non existent.

frank white - i use a program for torrents called vuze. its on my pc, which is on the same network as my xbox / ps3, without even telling it to, it discovered my ps3 & xbox and allows me to stream video from my pc to either one, might want to give it a shot.

    I recently installed Windows 7,

Windows Media Server is running (even though I tell it not too..)
I use PS3 Media Server for the files on my PC (and it plays EVERYTHING) but I only play 720p movies since my TV only goes up to 720p, never tried 1080p.
I use PlayOn ($39.99) for internet streaming services like Netflix and Hulu and a bunch of other things.
and VUZE also likes to connect on its own.

the other thing about the whole External HDD for the PS3, it will have to be formated in FAT32, and isnt there a max file size that you cant go over for FAT32??? where as if your streaming from the PC over the wired network, you can have a 13gb 1080p bluray rip.

i have my external hooked up to my ps3. i partitioned it, and formatted both in FAT32, but only one partition is recognized by the ps3 for some reason. i also have a 16gb thumb drive i usually just transfer a movie to that and play it. youre not going to be able to dl a true hd rip of a movie and play it from the harddrive, as FAT32 has a limit of 4gb, unless you split the movie into 2 or 3 pieces. also, http://www.redkawa.com/ may help you out with the downloading from the network bit

So what I'm getting is that streaming is the way to go. Anyone have experience trying to stream 1080p or 1080i wirelessly?

I know you can copy from your PC to he PS3 through the media server, but idk if you can do it the other way around. Never tried it. Never had a reason to try it.

Are you trying to watch something in HD?

Alot of times if you are getting choppiness you can pause it right after starting the movie and give it a few minutes. When you hit play again it should have a smoother playback.
