Protein side effects?

    I started working out again and with that I've been taking in extra protein. I have a shake on my way into work as breakfast and another after I workout in the evening.

    Are there any side effects when taking in extra protein? Should it be done slowly?

    I started working out last week and this week is when I started the protein shakes. The past three days I've developed a headache by noon. Also, my restless legs at night have started up again. I get restless legs sometimes, but this week it's been hell. Every night right when I go to bed my knees and lower back get restless-- I can't keep still. I have to sit in a chair for about an hour until it goes away.

    I know it sounds silly that I'm putting these side effects on the extra protein intake. But it's the only reason I can think of why I've had headaches and night restlessness the past three days. Thought I'd ask you guys.

    if u really think its the protein shakes, then stop drinking them for like a week. If the leg pain is still there the protein shakes aren't it

    ur prolly not eating enough. the protein shake is to compliment the protein u should be getting from ur meals.

    How am I being paranoid? I started getting headaches and restless legs the same week that I started drinking protein shakes again. And I'm trying to find the cause.

    I'm not freaking out or anything. It's probably just a coincidence that the problems started at the same time. I figured people here would know so I thought I'd ask.

    I was kinda thinking the same thing. I probably shouldn't be drinking a shake in the morning as breakfast. My mornings are rough and I usually don't have much of an appetite until lunch.

    No shortness of breath? Tonight sit real still and see if you have shortness of breath. Just really concentrate on how little air is getting into your lungs, and see if its shortness of breath. I hope you aren't getting shortness of breath too, as that can happen.

    Maybe there's some shitty stuff in the protein powder. You could stick to real food for a while. As far as watching the intake or anything along those lines, well, I don't try to cycle protein so that I peak on Thanksgiving so that I can eat chicken so... no.

    Okay - seriously response.

    Protein is protein. It comes in meat, dairy, soy etc etc. What you buy in a store is usually whey protein (from milk - think little miss muppett curdles and WHEY).

    Some people can be lactose intolerant, so whey might not be the best thing for them. Also some people find their stomach takes a bit of time getting used to it so you can get diarrhoea for a week or so after starting.

    But in terms of "side effects" - protein is protein. Would you worry about side effects from a burger or a chicken breast? Probably not.. so you shouldn't worry about protein side effects.

    I'm going to say it's probably just co-incidence in your case.

    One small coffee in the morning and one can of pop with lunch. Water the rest of the day.

    Ive been drinking coffee almost every morning for a couple months now.

    Didn't drink a shake today and I have no headache. :dunno:

    its probably the fact that you DONT EAT BREAKFAST!

    I know I would sure as fuck get a headache if my breakfast consisted of a 200 calorie protein shake and a cup of coffee.

    I go through periods of 2-5 days or so maybe 5x a year where I wake up and piss blood only in the mornings, but then I'm fine for the rest of the day. I went to the dr. about it twice and they said that a reason could be from too much protein intake, however I don't think that's the issue with me.

    I really have no idea what the deal is with me but I've just chalked it up as my body is weird sometimes?
