How important are having protein shakes throughout the day if I'm eating 3-4 decent meals a day with a big serving of meat or poultry, do I still need them?

I wanna cut back on the shakes since they are costing me a fair bit for the good shit so instead I've been having extra pieces of steak or chicken breast.

Is this good enough if I'm lifting regularly? :noes:

    thanks brolys :wavey:

well its a convenient way to reach your protein requirements for the day. If you can get to you protein goal for the day with just food and not have a huge surplus of cals, go for it.

nothing wrong with it, but you're telling me that a serving of whey costs you more than a big piece of steak? :wtf:

Actually whey is cheaper for the amount of usage it can get from the tub but I can get some good deals from the butcher here. :wavey:

Anyway its more of a curiosity thing.

Food > Shakes - I try not to even drink that shit. Shakes screw with my stomach, either make me constipated, or if I drink something like ISOPure my insides fall out of me.

i don't think it's that big of a deal either way. Eat a piece of chicken or something and then spit it out instead right before you'd normally swallow and look at what you've got - it's half way to liquified already and that's before it even hits your stomach. Once it's in your stomach there's going to be a small difference in the thermic effect as the body has to do a bit more work to finish breaking down the solid food, so you're going to expend a few additional calories, but overall it's pretty minute considering thermic effect is about 10% max anyway. In the end you've got the same amino acids doing the same things.

I think the biggest factors are, 1 - that on an all liquid diet you are getting nearly 100% of your protein from a single source (whey), and in general it's better to have a few varied sources, and 2 - there is some evidence to suggest that the act of chewing has a significant effect on satiety, so you might find yourself more hungry on a liquid diet vs a normal diet of equivalent calories.
