...I was thinking that we might want to consider imposing a new rule for the section, and possibly even limiting the searchability of the section somehow.

When working on client projects, but seeking the assistance or input of our fellow lab-ers, there are privacy and confidentiality considerations that need to be taken in to account.

I know that even sending the sample copy for the VO stuff I was asking about was already skirting a line that I didn't feel comfortable with because of who the client was, etc.

I think a rule requiring all members of the lab to act with discretion and not to divulge any of the information within would be a smart move. Not sure really sure how to measure responses if someone violates said rule, but having it in place might, at least, deter some problems.

A more drastic measure would be to make the sub-forum private and require approval by the sub-forum mods before people can view/post. I'd even go so far as thinking that requiring active subs might not be a bad idea (sorry!). But considering how the lab is a pretty valuable resource for us, I don't think the $3 a month is too much to ask. At the least, the private status would keep outsiders from poking around and causing problems. I think OT is already set to not be searchable by Google and such, so at least that isn't a problem.

These are just ideas to help protect our own interests (if you are seeking help/input on proprietary projects) and the interests of our clients (if you are seeking help on client projects). These things make sense I think.

    What are everyones thoughts?

PS: In regard to the active sub requirement suggest, perhaps all current members would be granted immunity from this requirement and only new members would need subs to get in.

CLIFFS: Read it, this isn't the offtopic forum.

meh. there are private forums out there like that. This is just a hide out on OT for a quick tip here and there.. not to have someone do your work for you (When you'd require a NDA...)

    I disagree.

This is far more than a hide out. The threads in here are generally extremely productive and there is already a sense of community.

Chances are, many of us are already members of these other forums but really don't find them near as useful as here.

I know I feel that way.

I say we let it keep going for now and see how it develops. So far we haven't had any problems and I dislike the idea of controlling it before there is any real reason to. It just doesn't sit right with me. Instead of "rules" why don't we all just make an effort to keep things going in a professional but helpful manner. Ostracizing people works way better than rules.

I know if it goes private, I most likely won't join in. I tend to give more than I get from this subforum and I'd be less inclined to help if it goes private unless the information greatly raises in value for more seasoned designers/devs/site owners.

If it goes private, we probably wont see beginners or guys just starting out joining in the conversation.

I can see some downside to the private bit...

...perhaps just a posted rule then.

Someone could make a private forum and invite users? Although making it seperate from OT would drive away most people :dunno:

I have a vbulletin forum on one of my servers, it only really gets traffic in the cloverfield section (since it's linked to cloverfieldnews.com) but i'd have no problem setting up a private section there, but like you said it would mean that you'd have to create an account on a forum other than OT... but i'm willing to set it up if you guys really feel the need for it...
